estate find that is a small wealth of historical 35mm photos and negatives of the U.S. Army in 1940 and 1941 just prior to our entry into WWII...From an unnamed Army Officer with the 3rd or 15th Cavalry?..and or 16th Field Artillery...Aside from being dated, what information I have learned has been derived from studying the images...The majority of the photos center I believe around Fort Myer in Virginia, which stabled some 1,500 horses at the time...bordering Arlington National Cemetary...Established during the Civil War..General Philip Sheridan commanding general in 1886, made Fort Myer the nation’s cavalry showplace...since 1908 the home of Army chiefs of staff...George C. Marshall when these photos were taken...Patton had also been a commandant there between the wars...This was the time the horse cavalry was becoming fully mechanized...represented here both horses and M2/M3 tanks..as well as Parade and Equestrian shots...Many field exercises pictured..possibly the 1940 Louisiana Maneuvers? Just a guess given the history of the Cavalry at that time...there are of course some family photos and many tourist photos in D.C./Lafayette Park as well as the 1939-40 New York World's Fair...Pictured, a good cross section of what is included..30 plus canisters, 36 image negative rolls and developed strips...A glimpse into the pre-war U.S. Army Cavalry. 532 / 2195 -

Here is an amazing photo album from Hawaii circa 1914-1918...full of historical b/w photographs of the ill-fated 1st Submarine Group, Pacific Torpedo Flotilla..They were the first four submarines to be stationed at the new naval facility at Pearl Harbor..there are also at least two separate one of a kind snaps that I can identify as Olympian Duke Kahanamoku who picked up 5 medals at the first new Olympics in 1912...Landscape and harbor shots in Honolulu and Pearl Harbors..the old Hale'iwa Hotel built in 1898 on the North Shore..a photo of the Pali or Mount Olomana? and Diamond Head, etc...Many of the 47 pictures include Native Islanders in various pursuits including surfing and outriggers..the original owner is not identified..my guess based on the amount of Naval photos and the access he must have been an Officer...One of the early submarines F-4 SS-23 sank just out of harbor in 1915 and as a result started an unprecedented search for survivors and salvage...21 men were lost...all of the F-Series Subs are pictured...there are a few photos and a RPPC of the search...The palace is pictured too...Several other period U.S. Warships are here and some German vessels including the SMS Geier an Imperial German cruiser that was captured by the U.S. in 1917..THE S.S. Pommern a German freighter interned at Honolulu in August 1914 and also seized by the U.S. in 1917...and the S.S. Prinz Waldemar steam passenger-cargo ship out of Hamburg...a few of the ships that I have positively identified...10 x 7.25' album covered in handmade period paper...A rare historical find..WWI era Naval history...Early Hawaii and its people and places. 543 / 2195 -

Here is an amazing photo album from Hawaii circa 1914-1918...full of historical b/w photographs of the ill-fated 1st Submarine Group, Pacific Torpedo Flotilla..They were the first four submarines to be stationed at the new naval facility at Pearl Harbor..there are also at least two separate one of a kind snaps that I can identify as Olympian Duke Kahanamoku who picked up 5 medals at the first new Olympics in 1912...Landscape and harbor shots in Honolulu and Pearl Harbors..the old Hale'iwa Hotel built in 1898 on the North Shore..a photo of the Pali or Mount Olomana? and Diamond Head, etc...Many of the 47 pictures include Native Islanders in various pursuits including surfing and outriggers..the original owner is not identified..my guess based on the amount of Naval photos and the access he must have been an Officer...One of the early submarines F-4 SS-23 sank just out of harbor in 1915 and as a result started an unprecedented search for survivors and salvage...21 men were lost...all of the F-Series Subs are pictured...there are a few photos and a RPPC of the search...The palace is pictured too...Several other period U.S. Warships are here and some German vessels including the SMS Geier an Imperial German cruiser that was captured by the U.S. in 1917..THE S.S.
