This beautiful cedar chest belonging to: Charles Rogan â€“County attorney four years Judge of Brown County for two terms Texas Land Commissioner in 1899 Is one of the incredible items at our upcoming sale. A bit of history we received from Rough & Ready Antiques Georgetown TX regarding cedar chest: At the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, a group of prison inmates were employed in making these massive, solid cedar chests for important political figures, friends of the Warden, and possibly for sale. While Prison records do not say who made them, he or they must have been highly skilled furniture makers as the chests display very fine workmanship. There are two different forms of hand-carving - chip carving and relief carving - found in existing examples of the chests. This particular chest exhibits both styles and is more elaborate than most.
