This 2001 gold 1-oz coin from the Perth Mint features the Australian Lunar Series I design for the Year of the Snake. The coin is in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) condition. It's one troy ounce of pure gold and has a proof-like strike type. It is what's called "four nines fine" -- 999.9% gold. (100% pure gold is essentially nonexistent due to the difficulty of refining it to that purity.) The Perth Mint has now produced three of its Lunar Series, each of which coincides with the Chinese calendar. This 2001 coin is from the first series spanning the years 1996 (Year of the Rat) to 2007 (Year of the Pig). Series II is from 2008 to 2019; Series III is currently ongoing. As you can see from the attached Perth Mint Series I Final Mintage chart, only 30,000 of these "Year of the Snake" 2001 coins were minted. That makes this beautiful coin very rare and very collectible. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's engraved likeness of Queen Elizabeth II.
