Sale Description

This week we have a unique sale...A True Digger Sale. We actually have no idea what is in this property. There is a main house - three apartment units - and a packed garage that are all stacked with boxes and boxes of junk, tools, and miscellaneous. Yes...there is some good stuff...yes, there is some real junk. I took pictures last week and the family is pulling all the piles of stuff out of the garage that you cannot walk in and other storages on the property. You will have to dig through boxes and the property and yard. We have done zero prep and the sale is CASH AND CARRY. No Credit Cards. Prices will be significantly below typical estate sale start.

This is the estate of the well known and loved Huntington Park Community Activist Linda Esperanza Marquez. As a small child - her family relocated to the Huntington Park area of Los Angeles when her father landed a job with the railroad from El Paso. When the family settled on Cottage Street - the majority of the area was agricultural fields. In those days Huntington Park was an all white area and the Marquez family were the first Mexican family allowed to purchase property in the area as they were mistakenly thought to be Italian. This oversight was of great amusement to Linda who loved telling the story of how it was irreversible once the neighbors discovered the truth. Growing up in the semi-rural area she was a country girl and Linda's father was very concerned that she was too much of a tomboy. After she graduated from High School, her father arranged for her to attend a ladies finishing school...but before that could happen the young beauty attracted the eye of a modeling scout. The Agency changed her name to Linda as Esperanza would be a hard sell to clients and she bore a strong resemblance to the then popular Linda Darnell.

After a successful modeling career in Hollywood by day and many industry social functions by night - Linda decided to make a career change and became an assistant buyer with Ohrbach's Department Stores. With her eye for fashion, social grace, and strong persona - Linda soon advanced to Director of All Clothing for the Ohrbach's Department Stores across the L.A. region. When offered a corporate position at the company's NY headquarters - she declined as she did not want to leave her mother behind. Linda spent her entire career in Los Angeles and when she retired - she settled back on Cottage Street and began focusing her efforts on being a community activist and soon earned the nickname "the nudge" for her constant pushing of issues affecting Huntington Park in City Council Meetings.

After the Northridge Earthquake - Cal Trans piled all the damaged concrete and pavement from the various damaged freeways across the street. This huge trash pile became known among the locals as "La Montana de la Muerte" (The Mountain of Death) among the residents of this sleepy residential blue collar community. As the concrete was pulverized,  it released toxic dust into the air causing severe respiratory problems for area residents and many was also was a massive eyesore and attracted vermin. Linda immediately organized residents and founded "La Causa" which took on the city, the state, and the feds and worked tirelessly until the toxic dump was removed from their neighborhood. The former dump is now the site of the Linda Esperanza Marquez High School...which fittingly is a US News and World Report Top US High School Award Winner! Linda remained active in the community and continued to win many awards into the 2000s for her tireless work for the community. She passed in the fall of last year leaving a huge legacy of community pride in the Huntington Park area..

Linda and her family resided in Huntington Park in the same home that had been in their family since the 1930s. The small original home now has an adjacent three unit apartment building added as the family grew and a completely packed garage. Being quite set in her ways - the property has serious hoarder issues with decades of items piled everywhere. The now empty apartments are filled with boxes of items, furniture, art, household, and junk. The garage is packed to the point you cannot walk into it....the family will be dragging the contents out to make a pathway. No disrespect is intended to Ms Marquez and as her relatives say, "Anyone who knew Linda - knew she was a hoarder." :-)

NOTICE: This is a digger sale - you will be entering the property at your own risk and CHILDREN UNDER AGE 12 WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY. We suggest you bring your own boxes, gloves, and a dust mask if you have allergies.
