LOT#J3: Rare French 18th Century Thiolliere Flintlock Owned by Maj General David "Davey" Jones (Doolittle Raiders)

French 19th Century Thiolliere Flintlock Owned by Maj General David "Davey" Jones. (Doolittle Raiders)

Double barrel smoothbore pistol with approximate bore diameters of 14.50mm measured with precision caliper. Signed on the lock plate "Thiolliere of St. Etienne". Stock believed to be walnut. Solid Sterling trigger guard, pipes, scroll and pommel. This flintlock pistol was minimally restored 45 years ago according to included letter. According to our research only, there are less that five pistols similar to this that are known to exist in the United States. Our research as an auction company uncovered anecdotes that some may have been used by officers during the French and Indian War.

More items from the estate of General Jones will be included in upcoming auctions.

A synopsis about General David "Davey" Jones. General Jones served with distinction as a pilot and general officer, first with the U.S. Army Air Corps (he entered pilot training in June 1937) and later with the United States Air Force (created on September 18, 1947). His record during World War II includes being one of the Doolittle Raiders whose exploits in April 1942 were dramatized in the film Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. He then flew combat missions over North Africa, where he was shot down. He was a German prisoner of war for two and a half years, helping with the April 1944 mass escape at Stalag Luft III. As a result of his constant agitation and harassment of the enemy, he was selected for the "escape committee" by fellow prisoners. The committee reviewed escape plans and directed escapes. Jones led the digging team on tunnel "Harry" used in the Great Escape, chronicled in the Paul Brickhill's autobiographical book, and portrayed in the 1963 film. After his liberation in April 1945, Jones was commended for leadership among his fellow prisoners.

After WWII, General Jones served in many different commands across the U.S. and abroad. Later as a test pilot, General Jones had more supersonic time testing the B-58 than any other senior test pilot.

In his last assignment with the Air Force, Jones was the commander of the Air Force Eastern Test Range in Cape Kennedy, Florida as well as the Department of Defense Manager for Manned Space Flight Support Operations. He retired from the Air Force in 1973. General Jones was an integral part of the Apollo/Saturn and later NASA space programs.

General Jones's awards and decorations include but are not limited to:
Air Force Distinguished Service Medal
Legion of Merit
Purple Heart
Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster
Air Medal
Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster
NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the highest honor conferred by NASA
NASA Exceptional Service Medal with device
Prisoner of War Medal (awarded retroactively post-USAF retirement)
Yum Hwei (China)

David Jones enlisted in the Arizona National Guard while he was attending the University of Arizona at Tucson, from 1932 to 1936. His later education included three major Armed Forces schools: Command and General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1946; Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, 1948; and the National War College in Washington, D.C., 1956.

Jones was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Cavalry arm of the Arizona Army National Guard, where he served one year of active duty before transferring to the Army Air Corps and entering pilot training in June 1937. After earning his wings in June 1938, he served as a Northrop A-17 pilot with the 95th Attack Squadron of the 17th Attack Group, based at March Field, California.

In 1939 the 17th was re-designated a medium bombardment group and transferred to McChord Field, Washington. By September 1941 it became the first unit of the Army Air Forces to be fully equipped with the new B-25 Mitchell medium bomber.

There is simply too much to highlight about General Jones's distinguished career in this listing. We strongly encourage you to reach out to us should you desire more information. We will do our very best to accommodate any and all inquiries.
