Fogli Hotel & Resort history - only owned by 2 couples since 1898, Benjamin & Mary Fogli and Edith & Jack Lessie who purchased in 1967 for private residence. In late 1800's through 1930's the banks of Kankakee River in Thayer/Shelby was a sportsman's paradise, attracting wealthy guests all over the U.S. & foreign countries. Access just was walking steps via a Monon Railroad stop. Foglis' originally came from Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. As a 12-guest room hotel, Fogli was known as a family resting place & delicious food fried chicken with dining seats for 85 diners. On property too was a club house (tavern), ice house & horse livery stable, all since dismantled. Verbal legend claims Teddy Roosevelt vacationed at Fogli Hotel. Fogli is a designated site by Newton County Historical Society. Blue sign in photos highlights its importance, sign isn't up for Auction.
