#113 Wooden Leopard Slit Gong Drum The subject item is a large, heavy, hand carved slit-gong drum, rendered in the shape of a crouching jaguar by the Zapotec of Mexico. The faithfully rendered shape of the animal is detailed with gouge-carved spots and other anatomical details, and has been laboriously hollowed out. The drum is struck at the center of the back, when employed for ceremonial /festival use. Wooden slit drum carved in shape of a feline suggest this drum was carved in Puebla, Mexico. Wooden drums, like this one, were preserved in indigenous villages for centuries after the Spanish conquest, and are still being produced in the traditional way by these same tribal groups. 28.5 x 10 x 9 Inches
