Coiled basketry is an ancient technique found across many cultures worldwide, where pliable materials like grasses, reeds, or fibers are sewn or stitched together in a spiral or circular pattern. This method allows for the creation of both shallow and deep vessels, often decorated with natural dyes or contrasting materials to form intricate patterns. The specific style and coloration of this basket suggest it originates from West Africa, where coiled basketry has a long and rich tradition. Baskets from regions like Nigeria, particularly those made by the Hausa people, are often characterized by their vibrant geometric patterns and the use of natural dyes. These items served various practical purposes, such as storing grains, carrying goods, or as decorative pieces. Vintage examples are sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, cultural significance, and aesthetic appeal, representing a tangible connection to traditional artisanal practices.
