The Civil War Through the Camera. New York: McKinlay, Stone & Mackenzie, [1912]. Quarto, modern three-quarter black cloth, printed paper spine label. First edition in book form, compiled from the 16 parts issued to promote Francis Trevelyan Miller’s classic Photographic History of the Civil War, with 16 color plates and numerous illustrations, many after photographs by legendary Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. To commemorate the semi-centennial of the Civil War, several publishers collaborated to produce the Photographic History of the Civil War, one of the classic works on the conflict. To generate sales, a subscriber’s edition of 16 parts was distributed weekly through major newspapers. Each part contains a full color frontispiece (not found in the Photographic History), variant text, and hundreds of Mathew Brady’s fascinating photographs, many never before published. This bound volume collects the material from those 16 parts, without the original printed paper wrappers. “Zealous in their work, often regardless of danger, and at all times handicapped by the vexing difficulties of the photographic process of that day,” Brady and his assistants “carried their cameras to every scene that promised an interesting picture,” capturing “scenes of actual conflict, others of places devastated by gunfire, of troops on the march or in bivouac, and of individual officers and men” (ANB).
