The mission insigna for sts-31 features the hubble space telescope in its observing configuration against a backround of the universe it will study. The cosmos includes a stylistic depiction of galaxies in recognition of the contribution made by Sir Edwin Hubble. The Space Shuttle trails a spectrum symbolic of both the red shift observations that wee so important to Hubbles work and the new information that will be obtained with HST. Encircling the scene are the names of STS-31 crew members: Commander Loren Shriver, Pilot Charlie Bolden, Mission Specialist Steve Hawley, Bruce McCandless and Kathy Sullivan. This patch was designed by the STS-31 Crew.
