estate find that is a small wealth of historical 35mm photos and negatives of the U.S. Army in 1940 and 1941 just prior to our entry into WWII...From an unnamed Army Officer with the 3rd or 15th Cavalry?..and or 16th Field Artillery...Aside from being dated, what information I have learned has been derived from studying the images...The majority of the photos center I believe around Fort Myer in Virginia, which stabled some 1,500 horses at the time...bordering Arlington National Cemetary...Established during the Civil War..General Philip Sheridan commanding general in 1886, made Fort Myer the nation’s cavalry showplace...since 1908 the home of Army chiefs of staff...George C. Marshall when these photos were taken...Patton had also been a commandant there between the wars...This was the time the horse cavalry was becoming fully mechanized...represented here both horses and M2/M3 tanks..as well as Parade and Equestrian shots...Many field exercises pictured..possibly the 1940 Louisiana Maneuvers? Just a guess given the history of the Cavalry at that time...there are of course some family photos and many tourist photos in D.C./Lafayette Park as well as the 1939-40 New York World's Fair...Pictured, a good cross section of what is included..30 plus canisters, 36 image negative rolls and developed strips...A glimpse into the pre-war U.S. Army Cavalry.
