One of the most interesting lots in the sale! Victorian era engraving in period frame, produced by F.Y. Hurlstone and James Keith in Edinburgh (1847). The subject is a Scottish peer, David Wemyss, Lord Elcho, the 6rh Earl of Wemyss, known for his participation in the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. As he was on the losing side in this attempt to restore the Scottish monarchy, he was deprived of his title and estates and died in exile in Paris in 1787. His wife died in childbirth and he produced no other legitimate heirs, so his title passed to a younger brother. Here he is depicted in the prime of life, wearing Scottish costume. A stationery seal and live autograph "ELCHO" are featured at the bottom of the frame. The seal, which matches the family coat of arms, is featured on the belt buckle of Lord Elcho in the engraving. As was the practice of the period, he proudly signed his name as "ELCHO", which was his hereditary title. Good antique condition. Measures 24" tall and 20" wide. Would look great in a home office, library, or study.
