The area he lived in is coal-mining country and there are many geological specimens to be had in the area. The piece measures 10.5" across x 12" tall. This is a page from Lewis Miller's sketchbook. His works hang in many museums including Smithsonian. His works have sold at Sotheby’s for over 15k. This watercolor has such fascinating subject matter. A day right out of 1856. There is no damage to this watercolor just slight age toning. Estimated to be in the current frame since approx. 1950. Just a fantastic fascinating piece. Lewis Miller (May 3, 1796 – September 15, 1882) was a Pennsylvania Dutch folk artist, noted for his watercolors of historical and every day events. Miller was born in York, Pennsylvania. A carpenter by trade, he kept several journals throughout his life which he filled with simple watercolors, richly embedded with text and captions chronicling life in the early and mid-19th century. His work is most notable for its depiction of life of ordinary people in rural Pennsylvania Dutch country. It is of special interest to historians for its depictions of everyday life and insight into local culture and customs. 10" x 12"
