Late 19th c. Short & Mason LTD, London English Compensated Pocket Brass Cased Barometer. The barometer comes in the original green silk and velvet lined leather case. Retailed at Almer Coe & Company, jewelers and opticians of Chicago. The barometer is in very good condition, untested. The case has wear to the leather outside but the interior is quite nice. Pocket barometers were used by hikers and balloonists since they double as an altimeter as well as being a barometer. Starting at sea level 1/10th of an inch of barometric pressure is lost for every 90 feet ascended, so travelers can handily determine altitude. Pocket barometers use the same mechanism as the larger aneroid barometers, but in miniature. These barometers typically came with nice well fitted cases, like ours. Measures 3.25"x3.25"x1,25".
