This auction lot is for a Hand-Carved Wood Swiss Bookmark with Stanhope Viewer. The viewer shows an old spa/hotel on the Rigi Mountain in Switzerland. The Rigi, also known as the Queen of Mountains, towers majestically between Lakes Lucerne, Zug and Lauerz. The highest point on the Rigi-Kulm is where visitors can admire a magnificent panorama over Lake Lucerne and the nearby Alps, and to the Swiss Plateau looking north. A Stanhope viewer, also known as a Stanho-scope, is a device that allows users to view microphotographs without a microscope. The device was invented in 1857 by Parisian portrait maker René Dagron. This bookmark has some age, it appears as the point has been worn or cut off and it is possible that one of flowers may be missing a petal - but this is a wonderful example of this art. The stanhope appears as a seed pearl in one of the accompanying photos.
