Vintage Framed Asian Floral Painting on Paper, possibly by Wu Changshuo. Frame measures approximately 26 w x 31 x 1 inches. Artwork appears to be professionally framed and double-matted (white/beige with green accent) and in a wood bamboo-styled gold with black accent frame, with what appears to be museum glass. Artwork is ready to hang. BRIEF ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Wu Changshuo was a seal carver, painter, and calligrapher. Wu was born into an academic family, and began writing poems and carving seals at a young age. Wu did not start painting until the age of 30, at the encouragement of Ren Bonian. Combining bright colors and sharp contrasts with bold, simple brushstrokes, he created a unique style, and became particularly well known for his bird-and-flower paintings. In addition to his work as a painter, he dedicated most of life to studying seal engraving, and wrote several important books on the subject. He learned seal carving from the Zhe and Anhui schools, and was influenced by the stone carving of the Qin and Han periods. His unique approach to art, later known as the “Wu style,” was inspired by traditional calligraphic techniques, and his compositions were often accompanied by poetic inscriptions. - Source: https://www.artnet.com/ EXPANDED ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Wu Changshuo was a renowned Chinese seal carver, painter, and calligrapher known for his use of bright colors and sharp contrasts. Vuillard was one of the central figures of "Les Nabis" ("Nabi" means "prophet" in Arabic and Hebrew), a group of Parisian avant-garde artists whose members included Pierre Bonnard and Félix Vallotton, among others. During the Nabi period Vuillard produced some of his best-known work--provocative paintings of middle-class interiors and contributions to avant-garde theater. Vuillard also worked steadily through his post-Nabi years, from 1900 until his death in 1940. He experimented increasingly with abstraction and powerful color in a manner that bears comparison with Henri Matisse and the Fauves. In the latter decades of his life he expanded his range in natural light, landscape, and portraiture." - Source: National Gallery of Art Title: Artist Edouard Vuillard "Vuillard" Exhibition Catalogue / Catalogue Raisonne by Guy Cogeval Montreal Museum of Fine Art National Gallery of Art Washington Coffee Table Book January 2003 - April 2004 -

"Gauguin: Maker of Myth" Editor: Belinda Thompson New in Shrinkwrap, 255 pages, More than 200 museum-quality reproductions of paintings, works on paper, ceramics, woodcarvings, and writings, including Gauguin's illustrated letters and books. Perfect addition to any artist or art collector's library as a catalogue and/or artist reference book. Also perfect as an eye-catching coffee table book. . Published by Tate Gallery Publishing / National Gallery of Art, London, January 2010 Language: Spanish. Measurements (approximate): Quarto i.e. 10 wide x 11 1/2 x 1 inches ISBN 13: 9781854379825 / ISBN: 9781854379825 ISBN 10: 1854379828 BACK COVER SUMMARY: "This major reevaluation of Paul Gauguin presents the artist and his work in an entirely new light. The vivid, unnaturalistic colors and bold outlines of Gauguin's paintings and the strong, semiabstract quality of his woodcuts had a profound effect on the development of twentieth-century art; Here readers will discover why Gauguin was one of the most important artists behind European modernism -- yet one who also challenged its very tenets. Because while modern art largely rejected narrative, for Gauguin it remained central. 'Gauguin: Maker of Myth' is the first book to fully examine his use of stories and myth to give powerful narrative tension to his paintings at a time when other painters through storytelling was dead. Gauguin's life in French Polynesa is often portrayed as a quest for the other, with the artist as the romantic explorer encountering primative cultures for the first time. In fact, he was deeply immersed in world art and a great reader of Polynesian stories and myths. This book cuts through the mystique surrounding Gauguin -- one the artist himself cultivated -- to show how he self-mythologized, presenting himself to the world as a suffering, Christ-like figure. Stunningly illustrated and unprecedented in scope, 'Gauguin: Maker of Myth' features more than 200 museum-quality reproductions of paintings, works on paper, ceramics, woodcarvings, and writings, including Gauguin's beautifully illustrated letters and books."
