This is a very fine collection of Nemadji Art Pottery. The cream and orange vase is 6 1/2-inches tall X 4 1/2-inches in diameter. The smaller green vase is 3 1/2-inches tall X 3-inches in diameter. The salt & pepper shakers are 3- 1/2-inches tall X 2 1/4-inches in diameter. The shakers have no stoppers and are marked on the side Royal Gorge, CO and were most probably purchased there as a souvenir. All pieces are in very good condition with nice bottom markings - no cracks or chips. More that you probably care to know about NEMADJI ART POTTERY: Twenty-five thousand years ago layers of ice sheets of the glacial age covered the Arrowhead region of the upper Minnesota plains. As the ice melted and began its retreat, the ground heaved and hawed under the pressure of the shifting great weight of the ice, caused rocks and ores to be ground into a dust that was filtered and wetted with a constant washing from the streaming melted ice forming clays of various shades and unique composition. From these clays Nemadji Art Pottery is made. It is known that early, primitive natives used the clays of this area to make cooking pots and vessels of all types – as shards and fragments of well-used terra cotta items have been uncovered in the ancient peoples grave sites. Nemadji Art Pottery is constructed largely from designs taken from those ancient discoveries and many of the traditional shapes are preserved in the modern offerings. Nemadji Art Pottery has never been made by native Americans, but is thought to be reminiscent of the style and coloring used by the ancients. It has come to be considered by many as “Indian Pottery” but in actuality has no connection to any American tribe. The coloring of Nemadji Art Pottery is accomplished in a unique kneading process that allows no two pieces to be identical. The pottery is kiln-fired and sealed on the interior. The warm rich colors are meant to recall the colorful costumes of native Americans such as those of the Sioux and/or Ojibway tribes, whose ancestors and spirits still roam the plains, streams, woods and lakes of the region.
