The Smith's Yard. Circa 1895 Original Stone Lithograph. Way 88; Levy 126. Edition about 3,000. As published in The Studio, June, 1896, London England and with their blindstamp in the lower margin of the lithograph. Signed with the butterfly on the stone. The image is a view of the Govier family's blacksmith shop in Lyme Regis, Dorset, seen from the courtyard. One of seventeen original lithographs drawn by Whistler on transfer paper whist staying in Lyme Regis in the autumn of 1895. Samuel Edward Govier and his son posed for these lithographic drawings and it is his son who is seen standing at the left in this image. S.E.Govier senior also sat for Whistler’s oil painting entitled The Master Smith (Boston Museum of Fine Arts). Original 1895 lithograph on smooth cream wove paper, with margins as issued. Very fine original condition framed into wood frame with glass front, matted and ready for new home - Collector's item! Approximate dimensions: Artwork - 8" x 11", Frame - 17" x 20".
