The Vangovango (VAHN-goo VAHN-goo) is a bracelet that is often the first piece of jewelry owned by a Malagasy person. The bracelet evolved from a closed metal cuff that was used to restrain slaves. The cuff was worn by slaves during the night. Once freed, the bracelets were cut and reworked by local jewelers. The bracelets are usually made of silver, often from melted old Francs coins. The Vangovango is worn in remembrance of emancipation. It is also considered lucky and can attract joy, wealth, and health. Some say that the Vangovango can ward off diseases or bad spells.
