An incredible antique artist’s watercolor box dating from circa 1860-80. The box is made from solid mahogany and unusually has a sliding lid. The interior has a tray in which brushes can be stored. Most of the contents are still present: the original porcelain palette, four porcelain mixing bowls with gilt decoration, and a selection of watercolor tablets. Most of the tablets have cracked with age, but the condition is good. The contents will be wrapped separately for shipping purposes to prevent further damage. The quality of the box is good, beautifully made like a piece of quality furniture although some cracking on the edges (see images for details. The patina and deep color of the wood show wonderful age. A lovely handwritten note from the original owner’s granddaughter in contained within the box stating – This paint box belonged to “Papa,” Lloyd Greenleaf Prentice, born 1885, died 1973. He used the paints as a boy and gave them to his only child, Julia Elizabeth, born 1918when she was four years old. [Note old artificial graining on lid and sides] Lloyd’s full name appears on the bottom of the box. Dimensions: 10.75” Length x 5.25” Width x 1" Height The Bowls are 1.5” Circumference Weight: 10.6 oz Disclosures: This set is in excellent functional condition, with typical signs of wear for a piece of this age.
